Why Reflective Dog Gear Matters

In Estonia, it's actually law that all humans wear a personal reflector in winter. 

This law has been around since 1992, and according to the Estonia Transit Authority, reflectors can be seen from up to 300 meters away. Their data shows that fatal pedestrian accidents in unlit areas dropped from 9 in 2011 to just 3 in 2021.

What does refelctive actually mean?

Reflective material doesn't actaully produce it's own light, it reflects light back towards the source. This means that car headlights and torches can really help reflective detailing stand out.

A coat that looks ordinary and grey, can actually be illuminated like the moon in the night sky when lit up by a torch or headlights and really make your dog stand out in the dark, making sure they are absolutely seen by everyone.

Why dogs disappear in darkness

If your dog is off lead and having a good run about and a sniff, it can be easy to lose them in the darkness.

With four paw drive, they can access places that we would struggle to go - through undergrowth, hedges and thickets of trees - dogs can blend into the darkness and become camouflaged like a tiger in the jungle. This is especially true of dogs with dark coats, who lose their outlines and seemlessy blend into their surroundings.

Off lead dogs often move in an upredictable pattern, especially if they have picked up a good scent that they want to follow. This can make it hard to keep track of them in the fading light of an autumnal or winter walk, and the further they move away from you, the harder they become to see.

Another factor why dogs disappear in darkness can be weather related - rain, and especially fog, can reduce visibility even further and it hard to keep tabs on our furry friends.

Lastly, streeting lighting. Not all parks and roads have street lighting, and if they do they light they cast might not be adequate.

From the above table, you can see that high-vis and reflective wear both have their strengths and weakness. This is why it is better to use a combination of both when out on a dog walk, as they will compliment each other.

How reflective dog gear works on a real walk and where reflective material should be

In the real world, you need to know that the coats and accessories you have invested in to help keep your dog safe actually work.

The reflective strips on your chosen accessories will catch the light of approaching vehicles or torches and make your dog much easier to notice in low-light or dark conditions.
